I'm currently trying to decide on a small tank for my office.
So far I am considering the Dymax, the Fluval edge and the Biocube 8.
They all have their pro's and cons.
The Fluval looks great and is glass but, it looks like it would be a pain to clean. And the lights would need up grading.
The Dymax looks good and has an open top so you can grow plants out of the top but, it is acrylic. Also the open top maybe good for plants, but, I would be afraid of fish jumping out.
The Biocube looks good and is made of glass, but, it doesn't have an open top.
I just have to decide which is more important, glass or acrylic and open or closed top.
I can tell you my experience with the fluval edge. The light it comes with sucks and your right it is a major pain the butt to clean. The tank looks cool but I hate cleaning this little thing more than my big tanks. Even with upgrading the lighting which I did by adding a strip light the back of the tank still does not get good light. What I like about this tank is the closed top and you can fill the water right up so when you look down through the tank it looks the same as viewing through the sides just as clear.

Personally I would go for the Dymax if your looking to grow plants in a nanotank.

    Here are the item numbers:

    Scissors Curved - #23690

    Scissors Straight - #23689

    Tongs Curved - #23688

    Tongs Straight - #23687
Big Als Rep, If I were to order the pair of curved scissors and tongs, would I be able to take advantage of the BCA discount (15% I believe??) and the free shipping still?

I know it's a smaller order but just wondering .

Arch... I have not hada fluval or a biocube but they are both considerably bigger than the dymax. The dymax is about 1 gallon. However, it is a stunning setup. I hope that they make it in a 3 gallon version next.

Default Big Al's Planted Pico Update!!!

After an hour or so of tedious work, the Dymax has had its first round of maintenance including a water change, plant trimming, algae scrubbing, addition of a new plant (small anubias sp.) and some Javamoss/Driftwood art.

First we will start with the "before" picture - It's easy to see that things have gotten a little overgrown.

Next, the post-maintenance photo - Much cleaner, but now looking fairly new again and in need of a little growth. Cloudiness is from mucking about with the plants.

The day after, things are looking much better. Still in need of growth, but at least it looks clean and healthy!

I am sure you have noticed the thread wrapped around the driftwood in the new photos. This is a method that is fairly common, and is used to give the driftwood (or any object) that "Amano" style fluffy Java moss coverage. Typically we would use a darker brown or green thread/line, but we opted to use something easy to see for the purpose of showing you folks how we do it!

Here is an easy step by step:

First we remove the loose java moss from the driftwood, allowing only the portions that are holding tightly to remain

Next we start to gently pull apart the Java moss and spread it evenly and sparsely on the areas of the driftwood we wish for it to grow on.

We make sure that it is as even as possible without cluttering the area. You should be able to see the driftwood between the moss.

Next we wrap the moss against the wood to hold it in place. You can wrap it as many times as necessary. You can also wrap it in layers adding more moss after the first wrap.

You can also warp other plants to the driftwood. We added a small piece of young anubias. When wrapping anubias, wrap the thread around the rhizome of the plant firmly, but make sure not to cut into it with the thread. Two or three wraps should be enough to hold it firmly in place.

The last step is to submerse the wood and trim the java moss down so that it does not stick out too far. You want any strands longer than 1/4" to be trimmed down. The idea is to encourage the moss to attach to the wood and then start growing outward. This will create that fluffy fern-like look.

We will keep you updated with how the Dymax's progress is going, including progress photos of the java moss!

    Hope you enjoyed the update

I'm really tempted by this tank. I was wondering how strong the current is? Would it be too much for a Betta?

    Thanks.
