Default5th Annual Discus Grow Out Contest Journal: battmanh

    Hello everyone,

I am so excited to have the opportunity to join in on the 5th discus grow out contest. I have always wanted discus and have been prepping this tank for a few months now. Good luck to everyone else in the contest!

    Equipment:
    Tank – ADA 90P (~48 gallons)
Filters – PennPlax Cascade 1000 and Sponge Filter
    Lighting – Ecoxotic E-90
    Heaters – Eheim 150W and ViaAqua 200W
    Substrate - Bare Bottom

    Parameters:
    Temperature – 29 C

    Schedule:
    Feeding – 4x daily 1/2 FDBW cube
    Water change – 1x daily 60%
Filter cleaning - 1x weekly canister filter; 1x daily sponge filter

I had some beautiful manzanita in the tank (as you may see in the photos below) that I purchased from tony1928 however I decided to remove them and keep the tank completely bare bottom to focus purely on growing the discus out to a nice size. Once they are larger I will likely add the wood back for decoration.

    Floating the discus for acclimatization

Hanging out shortly after adding to the tank

    Feeding in the morning

The reason why I am going bare bottom (this is after one night)

    Thanks for following!

Sweet! Bare bottom is the way to go for ease of maintenance. I love the last photo. Really shows how much waste would be accumulating if there was substrate in the tank. Good luck in the contest!

Yup as much as I don't like the barebottom look myself, it is so much easier to maintain my discus tank this way too. A quick Vac and you have all the detritus captured. Good start!

Discus appear to be happy in the tank. Swimming, eating, chasing each other. I am really happy with them and will likely look in to getting more in the future.

Maintenance hasn't been too much of an issue but I can't imagine doing water changes without a python hose - I'd like to know how everyone else in the contest is doing their water changes, reply or PM to let me know your experience.

    Pictures!

Here is a close-up picture of the 2nd largest of the group. He is somewhere between 3.5-4".

    A video of them eating

As mentioned in the first post I am using an Ecoxotic E-series LED which allows for colour customization. The discus appear completely different under blue light vs. red/purple light. I will post a picture in the near future comparing the difference for those interested.

    June Update

The discus seem quite comfortable in the tank still. I have adjusted the maintenance slightly to suit my schedule:

    Old Schedule:

    Feeding – 4x daily 1/2 FDBW cube
    Water change – 1x daily 60%
Filter cleaning - 1x weekly canister filter; 1x daily sponge filter

    New Schedule:

    Feeding – 4x daily 1/2 FDBW cube
Water change – 1x every other day 60%
Filter cleaning - 1x biweekly canister filter; 1x daily sponge filter

I would like to pick up more water changes and cleanings in the future but this is what works for me at the moment.

I have also been hand-feeding once every day or every other day to get them more comfortable with me. I will upload a video in my next update.

They often come to greet me as I walk by

    July Update

Things are still going great. I notice quite a bit of growth from the start. Added back the wood I had in the tank in the beginning and also added some plants. Maintenance schedule still the same.

    August Update

Things are still going steady. Keeping up with maintenance. I notice bullying from the larger discus towards the runt (pictured below) who has not grown much. The rest of the discus are still growing well.

    September Update

Things are steady as usual. My discus have laid eggs twice now. First time was on the filter intake and now it is on the wood.

Wow! The Leopards laid eggs? They are really young to be breeding already. Must be very happy with the tank conditions.

Wow, that's amazing that they laid eggs already! Mine are not even 2/3 of the size of my adults (mostly turqs) yet.
