Default5th Annual Discus Grow Out Contest Journal: thaim

Just picked up some discus from Rick yesterday! super exciting! while I was there I ended up picking up 2 blue diamonds =)

Bare bottom tank so I can easily clean the aquarium with all of the sides painted white. I've had a bare tank with no paint before and the discus don't seem to be as comfortable.
Tank: 20g and will gradually move them up in size.
    Temp: 86
Lighting: no lights. just diffused light from the living room.
    WC schedule: daily 80%
feeding schedule: hopefully 6 times a day if I can be around them enough.

    GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

thanks guys! the fish are doing well so far except for 1 blue diamond. I think I need to up the water changes and crank the heat up a little bit for a few days without feeding.... any suggestions?

What are the symptoms? You should continue to feed them to keep their strength up.

He's darkened up and just hiding in the corner. For some reason when I do a water change he colors up again and starts swimming around with the school but as soon as I'm done he goes back to his sick self. The rest seem to be doing fine. It's very strange. I have noticed some aggression when it comes to feeding as well. Another sign I noticed was breathing from one gill which prompted me to start using prazipro. As we spoke before with daily 100% water changes there shouldn't be any ammonia or nitrites in the water because I would be taking them out immediately. I'm using an Aquaclear 50 and I jump started it with old Bio Max from my other discus tank but I mixed it 50/50 new and old a week and a half ago...

Could it be that he's just adjusting to the new enviroment? if so why are the rest of them adjusted already and not him/her?

Oh and by the way the heat treatment for my orange discus seems to be working so thanks for that tip!

It might be the lowest fish in the pecking order. It's not uncommon to see one discus pushed out of the group.

Ok so I just noticed bloating. I'm going to crank the heat to 95 degrees like you suggested for my orange discus and I'm also going to add epsom salt to help him pass his bowels. I will also be getting some more metro because I just ran out yesterday...

This seems to be a very common issue for me with my discus. Is there a particular reason why that might be?

not that i have any special knowledge but 7 fish in the 20 gallon seems over stocked. Sorry about your loss as well, thats very frustrating and angering!
