Default6th Annual Discus Grow-out Contest Journal: Moloto

After keeping exclusively African Cichlids for the past 10 years, this will be my first time raising discus. Since my first visit to Rick's fish room several years ago, I've always had a discus tank in my future plans.

Before I left to pick up the fish, I filled up the 20 gal tank and set the heater to 86F. Picked up the group of six from Rick yesterday afternoon, and they seem to be relatively happy so far. Still a bit reluctant to move around the tank, but I think they just need time to get settled. Ate half a cube of FDBW 3 hours after they were introduced, and again this morning before I left for school. Pics below. I'll change the water when I get home later this afternoon. Looking forward to seeing these guys grow!

    Tank specs:
20 gal tank, with white shelf liner stuck on back and sides
Small HOB filter with filter floss, mainly for cleaning up bits floating around. Cleaned daily
    Air stone

Looks good MOLOTO! I like the idea of using shelf liner to cover the tank. Good luck in the contest

First major water change last night was a success, no issues to report so far. This morning they were quite active, begging for food. Ate straight from my hand, pretty cool

Now that they've settled in I've noticed that their pattern varies among each individual in the group. Pics and video below should give you an idea of what I mean. Interested to see which one turns out to be the best of the bunch. Since they each have a different pattern I'm hoping it will be easy to follow the development of each fish, with the possibility of before and after comparisons at the end of the contest.

Quick update for you guys. All six still going strong and loving the frequent feedings and daily 90% WC. So far they've received an exclusive diet of CAF Bio Pigment Color Enhancing FDBW.

Surprised to see how much they've coloured up in the 2 weeks that I've had them. I noticed that they seemed to gravitate toward the heater cord in the back corner of the tank, so I added a branchy piece of driftwood to bring them closer to the front.
