Not sure. There's so much conflicting information out there. I've read that rotkeils have bluer faces and stronger colour. Sometimes you read rotkeil and appendiculatus referred to as the same fish. Heros appendiculatus is also known as Heros efasciatus which is a non mouth brooding species. I think it's up to everyone to believe what they want to given all the information that's out there I always say, if you like the look, go for it.... assuming right size, gender, etc.

    Default Hemiodus gracilis

Here are the photos as mentioned in my PM Charles. I see you've identified it, though the genus is Hemiodus, the genus Hemiodopsis is no longer valid. There are two colour forms, one having a red tail, both photos attached.

There are 29 described species in this genus and several as-yet undescribed. Seven species have been recorded in the Rio Negro. Photos are few and far between, but Matt at Seriously Fish has (I think) five species included in their database. These fish attain 6+ inches.

Hemiodopsis is listed as a junior synonym for Hemiodus in Reis, Kullander & Ferraris (2003), but I haven't yet tracked down the scientific reason. Eschmeyer at the California Academy now lists Hemiodopsis as invalid.

    Byron.
