    Default Spawning Geophagus - Nov/17/2010

Well, i guess I have to pay more attention to the fish.

Early evening, Luke came by to pick up some fish along with some fish food. As we were talking about the L137 blue eye red fin pleco, I notice the geophagus steindachneri are spawning. In fact, there are multiple females already holding a mouth full of eggs.

One of my customer, Simon, was telling me the Geophagus steindachneri aka red hump can spawn at the size I have which is about 3". He was right.

I counted 4 holding females and they males are still trying to get other females to spawn as I was taking the photos...

    Photo of the male...

A couple photos of two holding females...

These must be the easiest geophagus to spawn. I have about 30 of them in a 50g tank along with over 15 6" or more plecos with only a couple sponge filters...

I am not going to try to keep the fry as I don't have space for any. But if you want to try some, come get them as they are still $60/6. But please don't ask me for the holding females as they are not good to be packed in a bag.

A couple of male surinamensis I got from Charles have also been displaying what looks like spawning activity too.

They'll flare their gills downwards to look like they have a chin, and their pectoral and anal fins turn blue/purpleish.

Fish are about 5" and under, not including trailer fins.

Seems like water changes also trigger the displays.

    Great fish, Charles.

WOW, sounds like a great batch. I suspect their colours are great in person, geos are such hard fish to capture their true beauty.

Hope to see a whole bunch of fry pics in the near future.

Congratulations, Charles! Those fish clearly feel at home in your fish room. Coincidentally, I feel at home in your fish room, too! lol. Your fish are better cared for than my kids.
