BNP and sand

This is a discussion on BNP and sand within the Catfishes forums, part of the Species category; I am wondering if BNPs are safe to have with a sand substrate in particular BNP fry....

Sand is safe for BNPs. Ensure that the same is not coarse and sharp.

I won't use Lordco Sand. Pool filter sand is much better and probably cheaper. Playground sand gets too much fines in them.

+1 to what gklaw said...do not use lordco sand which is used for blasting and smoothing. A dark coloured sand such as brown, tan, and even black is maintenance free to keep clean since you won't notice poop colour and dark colour detritus..as much.
Yeah. Pool sand comes in a tan, brown colour. Check with the pool/spa store to see if they can get the colour of your choice. Alternatively, you can check J&L Aquatics' selection of sand which are safe for bnp's. Other Marine Substrates and Media

Thank Ming for the reminder. The pool sand in my BNP grow out is getting a bit of green algae on the sand but that's probably because of the high nutrient level in the water and not enough plants.

Bonsai Dave mentioned that there is a store in N. Vanc that sells and in various colours.

like everyone else has already said, Lordco silica is way too sharp for use with corys or BNs, or anything that roots around in the sand.

Play sand is good, and the best I've ever used was play sand from Rona. Super soft. Takes forever to rinse out, but worth it.

The 3m sand I bought from Charles at Canadian Aquatics works great, I have them with my bnp and my zebra plecos.
