rubber lipped pleco died...

Hey guys,

So I discovered that my rubber lipped pleco had died yesterday seemly from choking on a piece of shrimp? I had cut up a shrimp for my cichlids to eat and it looks like the pleco tried to eat some and it got stuck. When I found the pleco it had a piece of shrimp lodged in its mouth. If I get another pleco should I not feed shrimp and stuff to my cichlids anymore?
