I used a product called Aqua Terra, it is a pond plant potting medium. It is red in color, fish and plant safe. It was dusty and needed lots of rinsing and was too light to gravel vacuum but served it's purpose well.
Any kind of fine gravel work. Either have the gravel layer really thin so corydoras can stirred all of it around or have the gravel deep (1.5" to 2"+) to keep the bad bacteria further down into the substrate. 1" deep gravel are prone to causing barbel erosion. Sharpness has nothing to do with erosion from what personal experience. Even if they get a nick on the barbel, the erosion is caused by the bad bacteria. I keep some of my corydoras in flourite/onyx mixed, I keep some in bare bottom, and kept some in ADA soil.
