    Default High temperature

Does anyone have any good ideas for lowering temperature without a chiller? My tank is at 82F and eventhoug I am leaving the lights off at all times my tank is getting hot.Can I use frozen packs, sealed in ziplocks, inside the tank? Or add ice to the tank?

I've heard of using frozen 2L bottles of water too lower temps during hot summer months, should work quite well, and easy enogh too control if temps lower you can easily remove the cold bottle. ice directly could melt too quickly and lower the tank too rapidly plus harder too stop the process !

82 isnt all that high for most species , especially if it's only a few weeks in the summer I'm wherever they are from has much hotter summers then we do! my tanks spiked into the 90's before and no ill effect.

Thank you for the input. My worry is mainly my trophs. I've read that they do prefer around 76-78f.

Shouldn't be a problem at that temp if its not too prolonged. A few weeks ain't bad. The frozen bottles is a good idea...also try leaving the tops off, maybe try leaving windows open in the room to get the circulation going.

    Thumbs up

I was thinking of taking all the tops off and replacing them with egg crate cut outs. I'll probably get a fan blowing at the tank also.So tops off and frozen bottles it is. Thanks guys

I don't keep tropheus sorry i can't speak from experience with them,

But I have had sub tropical fish spend the summers up as high as 84 at times with no ill effect, Make sure their is plenty of aeration as higher temps will lower the 02 in the water. but if your more comfortable keeping them down then i'd go with the frozen pop bottles, it's quick easy just make sure too watch carefully how it effects the temps and for how long.

Not just too make sure it doesn't go too low, but you'll have too be pretty diligent adding and removing bottles as needed or you'll risk temperature swings.

For example ice every morning that melts then spikes back up too 82 again over, only too have you get home see it's climbed ad a new bottle have it dip, then climb again so on and so forth, you'd basically have too sit an play around figure out a bottle change routine.

Swings like this will be MUCH worse for any species then just a stable temp even if it's a bit high. I personally wouldn't recommend messing with it unless you feel the temps are dangerously high and your seeing the effects on the fish.

I'd start with top off , egg crate too stop jumpers and a fan angled too blow across the top of the tank alone first before moving too ice. It's a very good idea! See if the temps start too go down.

I've got both of my canister outtakes agitating the surface as well as a power head. Also have two other power heads for circulation. Aeration should be sufficient. I'll probably resort to pop bottles in worst case scenario. Thanks.

I also opened up the doors of the tank stand ,where the filters are, this morning and my girlfriend just called and said that the temp already went down to 81f. I think the heat was building up in there and the water in the canisters was being warmed up as it passes. Well I hope it keeps dropping.
