To tell rd from midas is by looking at from top view. Midas have an oval shape from looking at the head from the snout area. Rd will have triangular shape when looking at top view aeound the snout area. Also the upper lip of the rd is longer or pointy also thicker. Compare to midas which have a thin lip and it usually just match the upper jaw. Also midas grows the nuchual hump much larger. Also rd have longer body profile while midas have taller body profile. See my midas tread in the photo section.

Also if you bough that fish from a LFS it will have a chance that it is a midas x rd cross aka midevil.

I didn't buy him, a friend bought him from a LFS in Chilliwack when he was tiny and they labled him as a Convict! He quickly grew in my friends 33 gallon and started causing problems and then got donated to me..

Looks like it has a more of a RD mouth, but the body seems a bit high in the still.
I'm pretty sure it's a Midevil, post some pix if you can.
Most of the RD/Midas are Midevils, unless you actually know where it comes from.

He's kind of an ass to some other fish in my tank, but not super aggressive. My Oscar keeps him in check.

I will get some high quality shots and video tonight when I do another water change.

He has a pretty white belly if that means anything

    Hello,

Unless someone can verify lineage most RD's or Midas' for that matter are a cross between the two. Certainly one can find pure strains which may be the case. It may be a little early to tell to be honest, but lips are a good judge of what kind of mix it may be, more RD than Midas or vice versa. Either way, if its a fish you enjoy the differences are minor, they will both cause havoc in your tank eventually! Looking to do a community of RD/Midas myself so I would love to hear updates every now and then!!

Here is a recent close up picture...

    So what ya guys think?

I had to remove him from my 130 gallon as he became very aggressive towards my Oscar and actually bit his eye and now Oscar can only see outta his left...

He is currently in a 55 gallon 4 foot long tank with another aggressive male cichlid, a full grown convict.

Looks hybrid to me. A midevil aka midas x rd cross.
