    Default oscar river dog

hiya i was planning to get an albino oscar but not so sure yet due to seeing other oscars that seem rather lazy L0L there 2 of them together just sliding back and fourth rather than turn around and swim all over tank. i think this is why oscar is a river dog as they say. is your oscar active at all?

I have 2 and they're only really active at feeding time. They are messy, messy fish and need lots of filtration and a min tank size of 75g for one adult, so that's something to keep in mind.

They are my personal favorite, even though they tend to be lazy and destructive... Still, their individual personalities can't be beat!!

I really like mine, have 2 6 inch guys in a 180. theyre very active when it comes to feeding time, most of the other time they are just bullying their tankmates but not causing any damage.

in narrow tanks like 55g how does oscar turn around? i've never seen that happen only the slide back lazy thing they do.. my tank is 18 wide so it will give a bit extra and its 48 long and 24 high. i dred to add tankmates for oscar could make lunch out of it.

If you want active, Go african cichlid. I love oscars, but I also love a full tank! Lol!

Oscars will eat any tank mates they can fit in their mouth. We found that out the hard way.

This page has a good listing: Tankmates for Your Oscar Fish - what fish can I put in with my Oscar? - Oscarfishlover.com.

Again, keep in mind that you'll need really good filtration and water changes...1 oscar is really all you'd want to put in a 55g, as they are quite territorial when older.

I have always enjoyed keeping Oscars. Each Oscar has a different personality. They tend to get bored and need things to entertain themselves with. A ping pong ball, plastic plant and pile of gravel to move around has worked for mine in the past. If they do get bored they can take out there frustration on heaters, filter tubes etc.

Immus, the two we picked up from you are doing great and nearly double their original size! I fed them crickets the other day and nearly lost a finger.
