Default Oscars or Severums and Angels...

    2 Questions....

1 - on the top floor of an older apartment building, wood frame, what would people say is the max size of tank I can get...I am thinking 90 gallon...or can I go 110...?

2 - I am wanting a showy fish for the living room, so do I go with a tank of Oscars or a mixed tank with severums, angels, rams, ect...?

    Any one have any comments......

    Severums are really nice!

Be sure to have Insurance, as there is a potential to cause extensive damage if that tank Burst.

    structurally i am not sure..

It all depends on the tank you want. If you are looking for lots of smaller-ish fish i would go for a mix of rams and angels, But if you want just a few, go for oscars and sevs. Keep in mind, that rams only live two years. Severums live 10+.

I would stay away from oscars if i were you.

If you are looking for more south american larger cichlids, look at one of the many types of geos,

The thing with oscars is, if you don't raise them together, they can't go together. They will likely fight.

1 - Put the tank perpendicular to the floor joists and you should be fine. My 120 is on the 2nd floor of my house.

2 - Oscar ssssss???? I don't think so... maybe 2-3... No more, unless you got massive filtration and a very large tank.

3 - My option!!! Get a 150+ and get a single Jaguar Cichlid. Very nice show fish!

Try a school of Festivums. Charles has a bunch of wild ones that are coloring up nicely and you could probably keep 10 in a 90 gallon. I had one with my Discus for awhile and it was just fine

A lot of really good ideas....I do love severums, so maybe severums...but are they hard to look after....I thought Oscars would have been everyone's favorite because of size and personality....but I will rethink them....

If I did 110 gallon, and 4 to 5 oscars with good filtration...would that work....mix up the variety....etc....I heard Oscars are easy to look after....

Oscars are my favorite for sure! They aren't demanding to care for as long as you are a water changing guru. Imo you could keep 3 full sized oscars in a 90g setup if you're able to do large water changes at least once a week. You should be able to keep a catfish or two with them as long as they are not small enough to be considered food. I currently have 2 juvie oscars and 4 adult featherfin cats in a 75g. I over filter with 2 x rena xp3s as well as doing large weekly water changes.

Good luck with your new setup.

    Cheers,

    Calvin

Thanks....I will keep everyone posted....I have kept the water changes on my current tanks going weekly with no problem....so I think I will do it with the larger tank as well...I like the Fluval Filters, very quiet...inside no hoses, etc....If I put a couple big ones in the tank I hope they will work....?
