starting a tank

    Default starting a tank

    Got a couple questions I am trying to setup a cichlid tank, I think of going with convicts right now.
    I have a Ph of 7.4
    Nitrate, ammonia and nitrite are all 0ppm

    I am using sand, and have one of those Geo system wood logs
    what else do I need to know and or need?
    are my levels right? too high? too low?

    how many cichlids is too much for a 55? jus for sake of argument lets just say the convicts

    Convicts are pretty durable fish, I'd personally have the PH a bit higher but u should be fine. The number of fish you'll be able to put in depends. If some pair up to breed, which will almost happen for sure with convicts, then they may become aggressive towards the others. Also depending on when the fish are introduced, if they are introduced early on in groups and grow in the tank together you are less likely to have problems.

    My suggestion would be to put in a couple plecos, and maybe try 10 convicts from Mike, you can't really go wrong for the price, maybe some catfish or clown loaches early on too.
