if it is max out at 3-4", it can't be a L182. How long have you had him? They take a while to grow to max size.
It is almost impossible to tell what type of ancistrus it is.

I was just going to comment the same thing, but I figured Charles would get there. There are so many Ancistrus and many of them misidentified, that without knowing the exact origins, it's probably impossible to ID. But unlikely to be an L182 at that size, as you already figured out.

Is it black with white spots? I believe the L182s are actually brown with tan spots.
