    Default Discus or Angels?

Hi everyone, I'm a new member here, and I live in Calgary, but I've heard really good things about this site, so I decided to join. So far I have to say, I've really liked it. Anyways, I have 6 tanks, a 135 gallon planted community, a 35 breeder/ growout, a 25 breeder, 2- 10 gallon fry tanks, and a 5 gallon fry tank. I have really been into the angels, and I breed them, but I was just struck by the angelfish disease called "White death." It killed off most of my angels. I used to have 25 adults a week ago, now I'm down to 4 . I am upset at losing so many, but from what I've heard from other breeders, there isn't a lot you can do once your angels become infected. Anyways, now I have my densly planted 135 gallon tank that just has a few swords and guppies, and some apistogramma's, so I was wondering what you guys would do with the tank. I've owned a few discus before, but they seem a little slow, and boring to me, but I've never had more than 3 at a time. Do they become more lively with more? How many could I safely add to my 135 gallon tank? There is only about 15 small fish in there now... What would you guys choose? Discus, or go back to angels, which I love. Give me your opinions, I'm open to suggestions too. Thanks!

    Dan

I've got no feedback as I've only owned Angels, no Discus, but I wanted to welcome you to the site Dan.

    Cheers,

Hello and Welcome. I would pick discus for looks, and profit for breeding. But they will require more work with almost daily water changes needed. Plus a few other things, Also i have read that angels can carry some illness that doesn't bother them, but will affect Discus. So i would not keep them together although some do with no problem. That being said i am a Discus Fan so i vote for Discus. Cheers

If you want to stock that 135 gal right away, I'd say get around 10-12 adult discus. Otherwise, grow out a group of juveniles in a barebottom tank (if you don't want to pay too much for adults) and pick the best ones to put in the 135 gal when the discus are of decent size.

This way you get optimal growth with the discus, because otherwise, it will be harder to work your way around cleaning that 135 planted to give the juvenile discus optimal growing condition than if you were to grow out a group in a barebottom tank and moving them in the future.

Yes, thank you. I am still considering which route to go. The discus would be a lot more work, but would probably be worth it for the looks. Just not sure yet. Thanks!

    I wouldn't count on
Profit for discus. Without a very strict regime of constant clean water if the fry survive they would runt out and
Be unsellable. Angels are far easier to raise. If a display tank then breeding isn't your main objective. You should start with 3 inch at
Least If substrate and planted tank. Bargain discus are usually already
Complimised. Best to talk to someone knowledgeable to have a
Good start and healthy stock. Talk to Rick at

Aqua farms for a positive experience.
    There's also a
Few good articles on my website.

I think you can't go wrong with either - a win-win situation. I've owned both and prefer discus mainly because there are so many varieties but I'm sure some would argue the same for angels. I like the many different colours, patterns, sources, etc. Ditto on finding a good source and fish. Good luck!

unless you have experience with discus I would stay with the angels. Discus are very hard to keep. Daily water changes and such...I had 3 discus and they all died real quick.
