How often should I change my filter media.

That would depend on the media used. Mechanical filtration should be cleaned regularly but does not really need to be changed until it shows signs of deterioration. Most Carbon media should be replaced at the least every month but preferably sooner. Most of the life of carbon is used up within the first 48 hours if not the first week. One the media is exhausted it will release the contaminants back into your aquarium so often is best.
For Biological media it has been known to go on for years with simple rinsing with Aquarium water. However, when bacteria dies off which it does naturally new bacteria will not grow on that surface again. Overtime your surface area gets used up so it is best to change a portion of biological media every 6 months or so.
Some filter media is designed to last longer so ideally post what filter you have with what media inside.
