How long has your tank been set up for? It sound like your tank is cycling again.

Is it mostly platys and guppies that are dying? Mostly neons? Or everything?

If it's platys and guppies, then I would suspect that the water needs more minerals. You can try some Seachem Equilibrium with your water changes. The other fish should be happy with it, too.

If your neons are developing pale areas in their bodies, then getting lethargic, then dying, then I might suspect neon tetra disease (which the other fish could catch, too).

I'd try Equilibirum. If raising the gH doesn't work and you can't identify another problem, then I'd recommend trying a broad-spectrum medication like Tetra/Jungle Lifeguard, which works on bacteria, fungus, protozoan infections, some parasites and some viruses. (Big Als online usually has it... maybe IPU, I've seen it at PetSmart). Seachem has a broad-spectrum medication that comes as a powder in a little tube, not sure what it's called. (AW has it in stock)

I know that it's a difficult decision to use medications because they can do more harm than good, but it looks like your fish are dying one by one anyway. First, I'd make sure that the water quality was good and that there was enough minerals in there to keep the livebearers happy. Wait several days. If the deaths continue, then try a medication. If symptoms appear in the meantime that lead to a diagnosis (like worms), then treat immediately.

I forgot to ask -- Your fish are dying at night. Are you using CO2? If so, then I think the CO2 might be affecting your pH or something. I'm not sure, I have never used it, but if you are using CO2 and losing fish at night, then a planted tank expert here might be able to help you pretty quickly. Good luck!

the tank is about 6 months old Know. I treated the tank with Equilibrium this morning, so we will see how that works out. I do not use Co2. It was mostly neons dying but now the others are going to. Maybe it is neon tetra disease.

You will want to test for gh and kh, aim for around 90 ppm gh (equilibrium) and 50ish ppm of kh (alkalinity buffer). Ballpark around those numbers should greatly reduce the die off. A slight raise of ph due to the alkalinity buffer will happen, but the kh being raised from 0 will greatly improve their health.

Make sure you figure out how much you need to add for your water changes and write the dose on the bottle. I change 15 gallons a week approx so I did the math to adjust that amount from tap water to 90ppm gh and 40ppm kh. Don't need to be exact, I needed somehing like 7/8s tsp, so I rounded to my nearest spoon size. Fish don't care as long as it is consistent

Hmm, if it's neons that are dying, predominately, then I'd be surprised if low gH was the only culprit -- although all fish will do better if they're in water that suits them. Don't forget to check the tank to see if there's a dead fish lying around somewhere; that can cause all kinds of bad things with your water.

I hope that your fish recover. It's disheartening and worrying to see losses like these with creatures you are caring for. If it's neon tetra disease, your tetras will turn pale in their coloured area. They won't just go from being healthy to dead overnight without showing signs of illness.

Okay So I medicated my tank 4 days ago and I have not had any dead fish in three day. It seemed to be a parasite. Hopefully that is the end to my dead fish. Thank you everyone for your help.
