    weekly or twice-weekly here.

It totaly depends on what kind of fish your keeping. Some fish tanks need to be cleaned every day to every month. You will just need to find what works for you.

i do mine (sand) a few times a week depending on how heavy i feed.

Question for people using sand: Do u use the gravel vac and clean as if youre cleaning gravel?
I use to use my gravel vac cuz i like to clean under the sand and whatnot. But its not quick enough. Like, by the time ive drained out 50% of the water, ive only been able to vac 25% of the tank.
So what ive been doing nowadays is just stir up the sand with my hand, then just use the hose-end to vac whatevers sitting ontop of the sand and catch whatevers floating.

Does this technique seem like its a lot of work? or is it what everyone else is doing?

I change my water and clean sand surface weekly, and give sand a thourough cleaning every 2 weeks. That tends to keep my nitrates in check. I use a python. I loose some sand but it's no big deal.

I gravel clean every week on all water changes but I only stir up my tanks with sand and then do a very light surface clean on it
