Normally with our tapwater conditions you would add salt until the desired GH level is reached. You would then add with water changes, to replace the appropriate amount removed.

I add a heaping tbsp per 5 gallons in my tanks. So like Grant said if I removed 30 Gal of water I add 6 tbsp when I refill my tank. I don't really worry over GH too much, last time I tested it my GH was around 2-3...
