    Default Using sand for substrate

I love the look of sand but not sure what is the best kind to use. Research seems to suggest pool filter sand because it does not compact. Rona has beach sand which is silica free, but not sure if it compacts. Anyone have any suggestions, possibly even where to get pool sand in my area.

I use pool filter sand from Great West Pools here in Richmond. I really like the colour of it and is has worked very well.

I have 3M sand myself and I love it. It's not available any more, but apparently there's something similar/identical out there now. Check this out:

I recently picked up a bag of playsand from rona and am using that in my tank. I unfortunately did not rinse as well as I should have but I think it looks really good. My crayfish love to dig around in it.

Pool filter sand can be purchased at any pool supply shop. There's probably only a handful of different brands but each one might be a little bit different in colour. Shouldn't really pay more than around $20 for 50lbs. I've paid as little as $15 but I've seen $25 too.

I would prefer the light natural looking sand, but need something that will not buffer the water. Also need something that will not compact as I will be putting plants in.

Most sand available should not buffer, with the exception of aragonite sad which is meant to buffer.

Check with these guys, they sell a white coloured sand. Most others carry shades ranging from tan to brown.
