    Default Hello from a newbie

Hello. I am very new to fish keeping and I am fast becoming an addict.
I live near Island Pet Unlimited Burnaby and that's where I got my first fish from as well.

    How I got into it:
One fine Sunday afternoon earlier this month (Dec 2011) I decided to browse through the isles at IPU not thinking of getting a fish at all. Then, I see the beautifully lit shelf of the betta section. How very naive of me to have thought that a little pretty fishy costing only $4.99 and displayed in a tiny bowl should be super easy and cheap. So I got one with a black head, red fins and blue rays.

What I have set up now:
I quickly realized there's so much more involved to care for a fish properly from a day of Google research. From then on, it has become what some called a money pit.

I've thrown in $175.00 so far (and plan to put in another $15 very soon) and have only a 1 gallon and a 2.65 gallon. (Math is a scary thing; it adds up)

My betta fish is currently in a heated 1 gallon and I am setting up the 2.65 gallon to be heated and filtered. The 1 gallon will remain a hospital tank slash brine shrimp hatchery. He has gone through a bout of ich but is fine now. I really want to put in tank mates in the future but I know 2.65 gal is a bit cramped. Perhaps 2-3 ghost or red cherry shrimps. Thoughts welcome.

    How I found bcaquaria:
    Google

That's a pretty long introduction. I am mostly a silent observer on the internet but I appreciate such an active community. Who knows, I might actually end up posting a ton

    Welcome to BCA!
you'll find plenty of information on this forum. Check out the different sections and feel free to ask plenty of questions. It wont take long to get a pile of informed answers.

Also, there is a tank journal thread which is a great way to show off your setups and ask for feedback or advice.

Beautiful betta you've got there by the way!

just remember that ghost shrimps are tough buggers and that betta's have quite the finnage to snip. As for the new tank size, its plenty for a betta. Better to save a larger tank for other species that can better co-habitate since bettas are hit and miss with almost every other specie

If your interested... I have 2x10 gallon tanks with hood and light. (aqua glow bulbs- good, bright for plants) with filter unit, heater, gravel, and replacement filters, 30$ each and a plastic 5 gallon, filter, heater, gravel, for $15.

Let me know. You would have a good small starter setup! ( or setups )
