    so one of my lfs has a gar approx 20" however im not familier enough with the species to truely identify it as a longnose/shortnose/spotted/alligator

    hoping someone with some expeirience can point me towards some resources/pictures to be able to identify between them!

    I'm guessing it would be an alligator gar. Florida gar is the most common in LFS but they hardly get to 20" in captivity unless it's 4-5 years or older. Alligator gar however will get to 20" in just a year and will get even bigger to 4 feet in aquaria. They get to 4-6 feet in aquaria and 10 feet in the wild.

    I'm sure the younger people of this forum are even worse with their language Google images is HORRIBLE for identifying species of fish. Go try to google image which sp. a "Geophagus Surinamensis" is, Impossible. You usually require an experienced hobbyist to indentify for you.

    im going to get some next time im in there. trying to avoid getting into the situation of getting an alligator gar, dont have the means to house such a monster
