    Default New Monster "Spotted Gar"

Just wanted to share my new monster baby 5" Spotted Gar. I'm not 100% for sure of it's ID but I really hope it's a Spotted or Florida Spotted but the LFS listed them as a Spotted. I've experienced raising a Gator Gar before and imo they get way too big and way too aggressive. Can anyone confirm the ID for me?

    Thanks,

    Andy

I highly doubt it's a spotted gar (Lepisosteus oculatus). That's a captive breed florida gar (Lepisosteus platyrhincus). Which are many being mislabeled across the world in many LFS as spotted gar and also florida gars are being mass produced in Asian farms. First spotted gars are the rarest to obtain in the hobby unless you have direct connection that can get them to you in the wild. Second, many of the location of spotted gars in the US are being ban of selling of native species and that's why they are so much hard to get. Even in Ontario's water where gars are banned of owning or catching. Actually gars are ban here in BC as well but LFS still sell them. I only found out about this last on March where they posted this on there ban list.

So if you see a gar labeled as spotted gar in a LFS that not a true spotted gar.

Thanks for the info King-el. Spotted or Florida it doesn't matter to me as long it isn't a gator lol.

Also very happy with this Gar. Just got it 2 hrs ago and it's already eating hikari food sticks

lol yup. I grew a gator gar before from 10" to 2 ft within 5 months in my previous 450 set up and it was very aggressive and took chomps at my 15" Pbass's...

In the end I rather take my risk and chances with a Florida/spotted Gar rather then a Gator
