    Default Sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus)

Here is my first ever Acipenseridae, Sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus). Actually closely related to paddle fishes and bichirs even though they do not look alike. They are in Subclass Chondrostei. What makes them related to bichirs is that both fish have cartilage skeleton, spiracles and ganoid scales. Although the scales of the acipenserids are modified ganoid scales called Scutes and that is why it does not resembles bichirs and gars' scales. Also kinda resembles a shark without a teeth. Well sturgeon was thought to be related to sharks. Jaw structure is very similar to a shark and also have a heterocercal tail. However they are more related to Toleostei than Chondrichthyes (Sharks, rays, skates etc etc).

Sorry for the crappy pics. Was taken by iPhone 4 and this fish does not stop moving. It's about 5-6 inches.

No did not caught it. Bought from Mike. Wish I could keep local sturgeon but it's illegal.

Yeah very cool fish indeed. Gonna get some more and hopefully bigger. I want some 12-15" as I don't wanna wait to grow this out as I heard it is very slow.
