    Default Stingrays, help!

Okay, so i was talking to charles earlier, but i want some opinions

I introduced a male marble motoro with my female on friday night, and the male was not very active today at all. Then, i noticed the skin on his disk was peeling away, so i thought there might be some ammonia burn or somthing going on, so i put some prime in my tank just in case. A couple of hours after i addedthe prime, he was moving around alot more, and he looks quite healthy.

Now i realize its not ammonia burn at all, its the female beating him up. She is swimming on top of him constantly. Keep in mind she is 9 inches he is about 12. The injuries arnt the worst in the world, the largest of the 4 bites goes about an inch up his disk.

What i am wondering, is what should i do? The male only perked up after I added prime, would there be some reason for that? Should i seperate the two? This isn't ideal, but it can be done. I would like them together in one tank.... The tank they are in right now is a 108 long, so they have plenty of room at the size they are.

Any advice would be awesome, I think ill leave them over night the way they are.

    Thanks,

    Alex

That's a sign of breeding but your rays (the female anyways) is to small to breed. This is normal when it comes to breeding although there are cases in which during this action one of the rays can die from the stress the other ray is causing. I would move one of them to another tank. Wait 1 month or two then put them back together, re-introduce them.

There are cases of female stingray eating alive other rays. I think one of the case happened at IPU burnaby if I can remember right.

Can you put an eggcrate divider in the tank until they grow some more? (I don't know anything about rays, but it would keep it to one tank and they could still get used to eachother behind bars!)

Raise the temp to 86F SLOWLY and add 1-2 cups of salt. This will help prevent the slime coat from peeling more and prevent infection in the bite wounds. If the ray continues to get beat up, u will need to separate them and perhaps even sell one or both...

FYI: a 108 is not large enough for 2 sexually mature rays.

Both hunger and aggression. Even well feed rays will still do it. They do have a fast metabolism.

Before when I used to breed regular motoro. I had two cases where one of the ray was eating the disc of the other ray. It eventually stopped when they learn to be hand feed.

its funny cause the female gets fed so often, 2 - 3 times a day, hand fed. Oh well, we will see if the male recovers. How big were yours when they nipped at eachother? Did it slow down when they matured?
