Erik's Swimming Pool to Koi Pond Conversion

Having changed out my semi-cube koi tank to a 110g Tuff Stuff black stock tank pond, I am planning to convert one of my spare tanks into a veggie-filter (bought some live watercress from a local nursery for this project before I found this cool pond site).

My plan is to use the Rena XP3's outflow as the water source for the veggie-filter and drill and plumb the veggie-filter's outflow back into my pond. Filling the tank partly with gravel for biological filtration but will have watercress on the surface as living filters. I also love the taste of fresh watercress.

Just need some good weather to do more outdoor projects (hopefully this week's positive forecast comes true).

Thank Anthony. Need to read up before starting my 1500 gallon pond. Or may be larger after I read the article

Never thought of using the smart idea of a planter for filtration.

I've done something similar before and a refugium for a sw tank uses the same concept. I grow macroalgae (chaeto) in my refugium/sump as a nutrient exporter. Now I have to decide whether to go with a regular glass tank (risky in winter) or a rubbermaid setup as my veggie-filter.

    A great site.

I had a 2/3 barrel (45 gallon with 1/3 of the long side cut off) last year as a plant filter/top up water for my pond last year.

It worked well and kept me in plants all summer long.

You may want to consider lava Rock for the media in your biological filtration.
It has lots of surface area.
