I'm no expert but sounds like it's dying....... a little more detailed info (size of pond and such) & maybe some pix or a short vid could help with getting an answer

Could be water conditions or a few other things. We lost all our pond fish, koi included, one year, so now it is our policy to bring all of them in and set up the 400g till spring. Lots of work but worth it

so it's actually swimming upright and not floating on it's side? Sorry the first post threw me off lol. How big is this fish? How long have they been in hibernation & how deep is the pond? Galons? Does it have waterfall/ aggitation device running.Sorry I'm no expert on this, just trying to get more info out there to help with the replies. Maybe a stubborn fish & nothing to worry about. I've seen them active during winter and go back down later to survive. Better safe than sorry though.

I was told that a pond needs to be 4ft deep.

I list a 9 inch koi last winter I found it frozen in the ice in my pond tub which was 3 ft deep with a heater and air stone.

The Koi was 6" away from the open area in the ice.

I was also told the if fish are not used to hibernating they may not hibernate.
