Default What is going on now??!!!

We have already had our own share of pond predator stories and pond destruction incidents by racoons and herons. The lastest being the pond almost drained as the racoons rearanged the water supply to the waterfall and ate or shredded every plant in the other pond. The dog has been sleeping outside at night till we can get our.....Yes, electric wire, around the pond. Just to give them a reminder that my pond is not a food source for them, but not enough zap so i have to bury bodies
But just had to share this...its 11:30pm, when i hear a ruckus out in the back yard, i run with my 3,500,000 candle power flashlight to the deck and scan the yard along the hedge, their entry point, nothing. Our dog is kinda running around looking at the sky. Its like, what is going on now?? My light notices the fake owl that was perched on the gazabo, overlooking the pond, is now dead on the ground! A minute later, i hear and see, flying out of the trees... a big OWL!!! I guess it didn't like competion.
Will our pond fish and plants ever be safe enough for us to enjoy them
I know i am getting tired of playing this game. Maybe, the only solution would be to build a big sunroom and incompass the pond and a large area for sitting and enjoying your surroundings.

Have you tried using koi nets? They probably wont do much against racoons, which'll probably just chew through it, but it should prevent birds from getting at your fish. As a last resort you could probably just get a metal caging installed so that nothing can get through unless you let it through.

Hello i was just looking online and the owl probably wont bother your fish. there are fishing owls but they are Asian & African owls, i doubt you have this kind out here. for the racoons you could get a cattle guard electric fencer, they have them at fraser vally building supply. you could set up a small perimeter around you pond. and the racoons will be in for a shocking experience lol. but it wont kill them & i bet they don't come back. hope that helps Cheers

owls can be quite territorial if there is not an abundance of food. it is very possible he was defending his turf

I prefer to think he was just hoping to get lucky with it.

I don`t think the owl is a threat to your pond.

I was lucky enough to have a Great Horned owl spend the daylight hours dozing in a pine tree above my pond on 2 occasions last year.Saw him look down at the fish w/o much interest.

The neighbourhood quail might be in trouble, though.

I have a plastic owl too.The birds are unimpressed. They perch on its head!

One night, a couple of years ago, there was a bang against my living room window. Nothing was outside and I figured it was just a cat. A few minutes later it happened again. Outside on the balcony fence was a great big owl. He must have been trying to catch my finches which were right near the window.
