    Default Ammendment to site rules

Rule 8: You may not flame any local fish stores. You may state your opinions of them, but comments such as "X sucks, don't buy from them" will not be tolerated.

Seems to me its a bit contradictory. Im not saying lets allow flaming, but any negative comment towards a given store can be considered flaming. No matter how well worded and neutral someone makes a negative criticism, people always jump on the store bashing bandwagon and it always leads to a closed thread.

    Easier to say

Rule 8: You may not flame any local fish stores.

I think the rule is fine as it is. People are allowed to have opinions and it's our jobs as moderators to make sure they don't go beyond and if we have too we just close the thread and warn the member or give them an infraction. If one has had a bad experience with a store they have a right to say so.

I totally agree. Rule # 8 is a guideline to help us to be MORE CONSIDERATE & LESS CRITICAL in life , as general. whether dealing with fish, sponsors, members etc.

I dealt with Edward from Fraser for many times, and I had good + bad experience, but it was my "CHOICE" to deal with him. and I live with the consequence.

I recently bought a PNT from Edward and this cute little guy is doing very well, enjoying his new big environment with other inhabitants.

In the LFS, the fish/pets & equipments are the owners' most valuable tools to make a living, and I am sure they all want to protect them in order to maintain their business.

When we see things in life not to our favors or standards, lets look at the other side of the stories before we jump to the gun too fast.

    Just my two cents !!!!!

Couldn't agree with you more Peter.

I assume this whole post is as a result of Bonsai Dave's flaming post about Fraser yesterday evening.

My opinion is that while this is a forum and everyone is entitled to their opinions, there are two sides to every story and before that flaming post was written, especially about a LFS that does not come on line, it would have been really nice for the OP to have approached Edward and told him his concerns. If there was no improvement, then the OP should inform members of his concerns. As I read the OP's post, it implied that Fraser was a horrible store which isn't the case. They have been around for at least 30 years that I know of and I have always had good luck with their fish.

Depending on timing, when we walk into any lfs, we are likely to see things that disturb us. Even the sponsors can't help but have to treat fish that are covered in ich or have fungus from shipping stress or are just about to do water changes so there are a few carcasses in the tank and the water is not pristine.

Again, just my 2 cents worth as I thought the post by Bonsai Dave last night was quite unfair to Fraser.

I agree that criticizing a specific store is not cool. Especially when you don't know the other side of the story (there could be a good reason for some perceived bad stores, e.g. major power outage that knocked out filtration to the tanks over night, someone who desperately needed to offload some sick pets that they couldn't take care of any more, unexpected international shipment that they can't turn back etc). Plus, on a legal note, BCA could get sued for libel for publishing such flaming posts.

The reality is that if a store is doing a bad job of keeping their fish, they are going to lose business one way or another. Either they realize that they are doing something wrong and fix the problem, or they go out of business.

I believe the more important issue is education of the public. Its like puppy mills. People new to being pet owners don't know that these exist and end up buying a puppy from a mill, thus supporting the industry. But recently there has been awareness into this issue, and more new owners are asking the right questions (where is this puppy from, and can I see the parents? etc.). Local reporters are exposing puppy mills, and bringing the issue to the forefront.

I believe the danger is not necessarily the LFS, but rather the people new to the hobby that don't know the warning signs. I constantly see people at LFS's asking: "Oh, i need a heater? I can't have Nemo with my gold fish?" etc. Can these people spot a diseased or deformed fish?

Sorry neven >.< I don't mean to hijack your thread... But perhaps instead of having flaming posts we should have ... camp fire posts (whatever is the opposite of flaming ). Maybe start a thread on what we think a good LFS should have/do.
