Hi Nicklfire,
There’s a new non-profit aquarium hobby group in Vancouver and I’m wondering whether you’d be willing to give it a sub-forum at BCA, similar to the one you’ve created for VAHS. It’s not a competitor, and people can belong to both.
The Wet Coast Aquarium Society (WCAS) will be meeting at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum at UBC. Jen Reynolds, the President, is a senior biologist at the Vancouver Aquarium, caring for freshwater fish. Hannah Evans, the Vice-President, is also a senior biologist at the Vancouver Aquarium, caring for saltwater fish. They are obviously experts in the field but also seem passionate about promoting the aquarium hobby for everyone, including newcomers.
I heard about WCAS from someone at a pet store, who put me in touch with Jen. Immediately I thought that BCA would be a great place to post meeting announcements and discussions for this group. Their mission to “promote sustainable practices in the rearing and distribution of aquatic life for the aquarium trade, and to encourage the propagation of aquatic life by hobbyists” is a really good fit for BCA.
I don’t think that WCAS plans to have auctions, like VAHS, but they plan to bring in guest speakers every month, including someone to speak about shrimp. (I’m quite excited about that.) They also plan to have aquarium/bowl shows, breeders’ awards, horticulture awards, and BBQs, and to have a marine and reef-keeping group.
Here’s a link to their website: About | Wet Coast Aquarium Society
The first meeting will be May 9th, at the UBC Aquatic Ecosystems Research Laboratory Building (AERL), Room 120 (Next door to the Beaty Museum)
Do you think that it would be possible to have a sub-forum for this new group?
Thank you!
Maureen
