I'm doing some research into starting a salt water tank, and was wondering if anyone had used this instead of live rock. Sure like the idea that reefs weren't destroyed in the making of it.

I'm doing some research into starting a salt water tank, and was wondering if anyone had used this instead of live rock. Sure like the idea that reefs weren't destroyed in the making of it.

Another reef friendly choice is the Caribsea base rock, it's from terrestrial sources and then seed it with live rock. Takes more time, but saves the real thing and is cheaper.

but you could use this to seed that rock right?
Yes, or you could buy some "used" live rock and not directly contribute to the destruction.
From what I can see, all that the product is, is man made base rock that has been seeded and aged.
Some people claim/believe that man mad rock isn't nearly as porous as natural rock though.
