Default Java Moss in a Pot

This a ceramic pot I set up to test how well Java Moss grows through the plastic mesh sold by Michael’s Craft store.

I got an unglazed terra cotta pot at Walmart for 79 cents, and a sheet of mesh at Michael’s for 69 cents.

A piece of mesh was cut into a small circle, to fit the ledge inside the flower pot.
-

And placed the mesh inside the pot.
-

Before putting the pot inside my aquarium, I broke up a wad of Java Moss, and put it under the mesh. Hopefully it will grow up through the mesh and form a bush.

I'll be curious to know how this turns out. Any progress updates?

Five weeks now, and not much growth. It looks green and healthy, so it may still grow. Last week it went about 5 days without light, while I fixed a burnt out ballast.

That's a pretty nifty idea. I bet it would make a neat little house (with an 'eco-roof'!) for a pair of dwarf cichlids if you punched a hole in the side of it for them to sneak in and out of. If you tried that though, I would sandwich the java moss between 2 mesh discs so that it would be more inclined to grow up towards your light instead of possibly balling up inside the pot.

Thanks for sharing, looking forward to more pictures.

After waiting almost 3 months I decided the moss wasn’t going to grow anytime soon, so I did what I should have done in the first place. I cut a wad of moss from another tank and put it on top of the plastic mesh. Right now it’s weighed down with a tiny rock, but the moss should grow onto the mesh soon, making the rock unnecessary.

Probably I should have used a larger piece of moss to begin with, and putting it on top would have been better.

Yes, I had a small amount of moss placed directly into a small pot, laid on its side without a lid and it seemed to do ok. A great way to decorate a plain pot.
