    Talking Meeting date change

Due to the Canucks Stanley Cup playoff hockey game, we've changed the date of our next WCAS meeting to Tuesday, June 14th, at our regular time of 7:30 p.m. instead of the day before when our meeting would normally be held.

The meeting will be held in Room 2010 of the Douglas Kenny Building at UBC (not the Biodiversity museum), so please see our website for details on how to get there.

    Default Next meeting in July

    Hi KayKay,
Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 11 at 7:30 p.m. Hope to see you there!

Here's the outline of the planned talk, and there will be great prizes & discussions as well:

Dr. Eric B. (Rick) Taylor, Professor
Department of Zoology, University of British Columbia

My talk will include an introduction to the value and history (brief) of
the UBC Fish Collection and a more detailed introduction to some of the
fascinating evolutionary stories involving BC freshwater fishes, from
resolving cryptic species, to unisexual fishes, to hotsprings fishes.

That's interesting! I didn't know that UBC had a fish collection!

    Talking July 11 Meeting

Yes, I've had the pleasure of being brought into one of the old labs where they housed part of it before they were moved to the Beaty Biodiversity Museum.

They have some of the jars on display there now with the major oddities like deep sea lanternfish and so on. When I got the chance to look at it before, it was amazing since I deal with fish every day in my job, but mostly reasonably well-known species. Seeing all these completely unknown to me species and their neat old-style typewriter labels really showed their archival value. Who knows, some of the specimens they have in their collection may even be extinct in the wild now.

I have heard that Dr. Taylor is a great speaker (and a genuine fish nut), so I'm looking forward to meeting him...
