Default Win a Fluval 45 bowfront: WCAS membership draw prize

    Hi, All

Nobody has posted about this yet, so I thought I'd mention that there is a great prize being offered at the Wet Coast Aquarium Society's first meeting: a 46 gallon Fluval tank and stand (and much more). Aquariums West donated this to help the group with their membership drive.

If you're interested in joining the WCAS and would also like to enter your name in the draw, you can download a membership form from their website ( Wet Coast Aquarium Society | Vancouver, Canada ) or pick one up at the first meeting (May 9th). They're also available from some pet stores (info online).

Here's the info from WCAS's website:

    Hi Laurie,

One of the main things for us with starting out a new aquarium society was securing an appropriate meeting space. Since there is the new museum at UBC, the Beaty Biodiversity Museum, they were interested in helping us out and hopefully getting people also interested in the new museum by providing a meeting space. Right now we have to take whatever space we can get for free, and we're very grateful for it. So for the forseeable future our meetings will be held at UBC, unless another viable alternative is available.

However, there is excellent public transportation available to UBC, and if anyone needs help figuring that out we are happy to assist. Also, it might be possible to organize a fish-geek carpool from say the Fraser Valley using this sub-forum on BC Aquaria?

    Hope this is some help...

    Cheers,
    Jen

I actually tried to get some people from the Fraser Valley area to get together for a pooling to the last VAHC meeting at the Vancouver aquarium April 13th. For what ever reason I had 0 response, but I still think the idea is good. It's 65-70 Km's one way to the aquarium from the Langley area so pooling together just makes a lot of sense cost wise. Hmm, too bad that didn't work out. I used to carpool for Nature Vancouver meetings & field trips- it was sometimes a bit more difficult to organize but great when I could do it. Hopefully you can get some folks together for the kick-off WCAS meeting. We'd love to have you there!

Default RE: far to go to meetings

Hi there, Gary here. I'm the Secretary of the Wet Coast Aquarium Society. Glad to see we have folks from around the metro Vancouver area who interested in WCAS. Just wanted to follow-up on Jen's note about our search for a meeting venue.

We tried hard to find facilities we could use at no cost, like our friends at VAHS enjoy at the Vancouver Aquarium for their monthly meetings and fish sales.

Unfortunately free facilities in these times of tight budgets are very rare indeed, and any availability on weeknights around town is also a challenge. While the use of UBC's spaces does have a cost, our arrangement with the Beaty Biodiversity Museum (BBM) is very supportive of our activities and schedule, but not entirely free.

However the BBM is a beautiful place and the Blue Whale skeleton is spectacular. We do encourage our members and the public to visit and support the new Museum in any way you can. And, as Jen pointed out, the public transport is very well established to UBC. Here's a link to help people get there:

Getting to the Museum | Beaty Biodiversity Museum

Also, remember the *first* WCAS meeting on May 9th is being held *next door* to the Museum in the large lecture theatre (room 120) of the Aquatic Ecosystems Research Laboratory (AERL building). Actually, just walk the length of the Blue Whale from its head towards its tail and you'll be standing in front of the AERL building!

Parking and getting there details are the same as for BBM.

    Cheers, Gary.

Maybe WCAS (and VAHS, if it's not already doing this) can experiment with new technologies once everything is up and running. Then people would be able to attend online.

I used to run writing workshops and a writing club for teens all over the province. We used to get together using Elluminate Live (free to school districts now). For those meetings, everyone was online at separate computers.

But we also used Elluminate Live for district reviews, to bring a few people into a larger meeting that was taking place in an actual room. It wasn't perfect, but it was pretty good and it meant that recordings were available later for people who weren't able to make them in 'real time.'
