August update: All went well in July. I sold 4 of the smaller discus from the group and moved the remaining 8 into a 50 gallon tank. Additionally I finally got my auto feeder up and running. An increase in growth was noticeable immediately which I mostly attribute to the increase in feeding frequency. I am using the Eheim Automatic Twin Feeder which dispenses food into the tank every 4 hours around the clock. The feeder is loaded with loose freeze dried black worms and I found that they need to be chopped up a bit in order to get them to dispense from the feeder without plugging it. I still feed the discus additional cubes of black worms several times a day but the feeder gives them something to pick away at between meals and through the night.

I put a light over the tank this month so that I could get some better photos:

The discus have put on a good 3/4" in growth since the last update:

The plan for August: I don't intend to make any changes this month. Just keep going with the never ending feedings and water changes.

Every month I try to offer some advice for those participating in the grow out contest and this month my advice is "consistency". Every missed feeding or water change will take a toll on baby discus in the form of lost growth potential and weakened condition. I know the summer months can be challenging as many of us travel, have out of town visitors, enjoy participating in outdoor activities and so on but making an extra effort to keep on top of things or setting up automated systems will pay off in the long run.

Rick are you still planning on doing 300% water changed daily like with the small tank.

My fish are very close to where the control is however one thing I lack is consistancy. My largest fish is slightly smaller than yours, where as the smallest 1/2 the size.

I reduced to 200% daily in the bigger tank. It's easier to get consistent growth rates in a small tank as there is no aggression. Everyone gets there share at feeding time. Once you give them a bunch of space the strong start picking on the weak.

That is the reason I am nervous about moving my contest discus (along with the 2 ghost discus I bought), to the 46 gallon tank. One of the Ghosts tends to pick on the other 3. It settled down somewhat in the 20th gallon, but I'm worried moving them to the 46 gal tank with cause more fighting to start.

Size wize they are still ok in the 20 with 90% water changes, but I'm going to have to move them eventually.

That is definitely a challenge when you only have a few discus but it's ok as long as everyone is still getting their share of food at meal time.

Happy 4 month birthday to all of the grow out contest fish!

Over the past couple of weeks I have seen a significant amount of white pattern develop on the discus in the control group. I feel like this would be a prime time to start bringing out their orange/red colouration by adding a colour enhancing food to their diet so for the next couple of weeks I am going to feed them colour enhancing black worms and we will see how much of a difference it makes.
