Thanks Brent, so far so good
September update: All went smoothly with the control group over the past month. Growth averaged just a shade under 1" for the month which is pretty good. They are now around 3.75". The only change to report was the addition of colour enhancing black worms to their diet two weeks ago and as can be seen in the below photos it made a significant difference….
These two photos are of the same fish taken around 2 weeks apart and show what a difference colour enhancing food can make.
Wow that's amazing. If you had a tank of mixed discus, say blue diamonds along with red fish like that, would it end up producing weird looking BD's or it wouldn't matter since BD's have no significant red pigmentation?
Sorry, I should have been more clear. I meant the red-enhancing food.
Anything crossed with pigeon comes out peppered. You need an existing pigeons cross into pigeon to clean it up.
Rick the fish are looking good. The autofeeder has really started to show its strength. I am 1/4" behind you and I am guessing its the feeding. I was away for 2 weekends last month and combined with only feeding 1 at 7am then not again until 7pm when I get home during the week. I really need to get the feeder going. Apparently color food as well. I was excited last night to see red coming in on my fish but yours are going crazy.
The other thing I notice with everyone elses fish is consistancy in size. Where in my tank I have 1 that is larger, 3 slightly smaller and 3 that are half the size. Funny is one of the little guys is always first to food yet remains small.
Also forgot to ask which enhancing food you are using out of the 2 on your site.
I used Bio Plus for the first three or so days and then CAF Formula as a staple after that. The Bio Plus has carophyll pink. This is a very strong and fast acting colour enhancer. Perfect for when you want to bring up colours fast.
The CAF formula has astaxanthin derived from haematococcus micro algae. Being a natural source of astaxanthin I prefer to use this as a staple in their diets.
Things have gone well over the past month. The fish survived a 3 day power outage followed up by another shorter power outage a week or so later. I have a gas generator and was able to provide heat and air for the grow out fish but I didn't feed or do water changes on the grow out tank during the outages. Even so they still managed to grow another 1/2" in September.
The discus are now averaging 4.25".
Below is an updated look at the progression of the pattern and colour development.
August: Prior to using any colour food.
September: The same fish after 3 days of BioPlus Colour Enhancing Black Worms and approximately 10 days CAF Colour Enhancing Black Worms.
October: The same fish after a month of rotating between CAF Colour, Original and Spinach Black Worms.
