Some sad news to report. I am down to one Red Map contest discus. The fish I lost was my shier fish, was more peppered in the photos, and had a chipped eye.

When I went to feed my fish yesterday morning, I found one of the contest fish head standing. He was having obvious swim bladder issues, unable to swim with full control. The only other symptom he showed was that he was a bit bloated. Not overly bloated, but had a fully looking belly than the other fish. Because they were not fed since the night before, I immediately started treating him for bloat.

I lowered the water line and added epsom salt. At first I had high hopes that he would make a recovery, he was still moving around at this point. Unfortunately that did not last, he got progressively worse, and was gone in about 4 hours.

This has been beyond frustrating, especially since he was perfecting fine 8 hours earlier, but I will carry one with my sole Red Map. He is still hanging out with the Ghosts I added a few weeks ago, and they will all be moved to the 45 gal tank soon.

That is sad news. I'm glad that you still have the stronger one to keep going with.

    Happy Friday everyone!

I just realized its been a while since I posted any pics. Here are a couple of my remaining contest fish. He is showing more and more pattern each day.

Happy Friday to you pamdb33 Your "lone ranger" is looking very nice. Nice shape, nice pattern, nice finnage.....and by the pic, it doesn't look like there is any peppering. It was a good idea to get the ghost discus....they will keep your lone survivor company. Keep the faith. You have all this experience to draw on for "grow out #5"

Looks like being an only child is paying off for him/her. It is developing really nicely. Keep it up!

My contest fish and his friends got upgraded to a 45 bow front this morning. The new digs include an EHEIM Jager, an AquaClear 70 HOB filter and a new roommate!

I've added a Checkerboard I had in another tank that is about the same size. So far so good, everyone is schooling and getting along. Now that there is more room to grow and make a mess, I'll be adding my homemade Beef heart food into their current diet of Freeze dried black worms. I'm hoping the new food will help the Red Map look a little more red.

Sounds like a nice tank upgrade! I'm looking forward to seeing it. Are you adding any colour enhancers to the homemade food?

Cool, it will be interesting to see how the red/orange colours develop with the paprika added.
