the oriental sword is surviving, whatever leaves didnt root properly is yellowing but a lot of offspring seems to be shooting off of the plant.

NEW: added 8 red phantoms and 4 julli corys. so far theyre all getting along for a week without issues. no issue over availability of food since the discus feeds from the feeding ‘cone’ i stuck together for thrm.

so the sump had been running without issues, since im doing daily water change of at least 50%, i can keep up with water evaporation and removing air from the bridge if necessary.

I built a water level auto off switch and installed it to prevent the pump from running dry - currently trying to build my own check valve cause the pump at the lowest levels keeps turning on and off due to the water in the return pump empty / fill causing the water level to rise and drop triggering the water level switch over and over.

That's quite the system that you have DIY'd. Great to see the fish are all doing well. Excellent growth! Keep it up

#cant really tell from pictures, but the discus are starting to color on the fins and edges, a blue tint. not sure why pictures go sideways when uploaded

#end of February change: final tank setup for the moment. took out the sword. took out one of the air sponge filters. Sump tank system is completed (final change to add a check valve worked on the return, but it reduced the power but there's still a lot of cycling so i'm not concerned. Made the return pump a direct water line into the tank to a waterfall attachment)

#sideway pic for some reason, but this is the 'waterfall' outlet. it really helps to push the surface food down to the ground.

so. something i did which wasnt too smart was wiping the tank and all the tubing without taking the items out.. so likely all the bad item exploded in the water from the tubing i wiped down.

one of my discus turned black, but turns back normally when eating or when i approach it. when it hides in the corner it turns black. there is also a scratch on its side from likely a bad rub against something. eating without issue. i feel likely it swallow a bad piece from the cleanup. i did close to 90% waterchange during the wipedown with extra prime..

hopefully a nice water change will clean everything up and eventually flush him cleanly.

water parameter was checked and no issues.

Thanks for the greatly detailed monthly update and all the photos. As you have found when you do the big wipe down you need to do a big water change to get everything out of the tank.

its really hard to tell if theyre recovering properly. about two days ago I took the blackening one out to a ten gallon for quarantine. within a day he looks to be fine. the tank is likely already filled with aquarium salt and melafix meds from a month ago when i treated a single red phantom, i only added a small amount of prazipro in case its a worm issue. the darken discus didnt shows any further sign of darkening.

while he was in quarantine, another of my discus was turning black. so i’m feeling i have a fungus outbreak in the tank from when i wiped everything off during my cleaning a week ago. yesterday The discus in my 10g quarantine i moved back into my 55g with the rest of them. added the proper dosing of melafix and prozipro into the 55g. will monitor to see if there is improvement. this morning i didnt see any signs of major darkening.

i changed 24 hour lighting back to 14 hour day lighting till i get this outbreak under control. will do daily doses to melafix to get the fungus under control.

I lost two cories during the two weeks. one was already damaged when i got him, second one received popeye/fungal from the looks of it this week - but could be the discus are picking on them too much. they were missing their usually long whiskers. the two corys left still have their full whiskers.

thats the recent update so far. potential that i could lose these discus due to the outbreak. so far theyve been survivng the week
