the last time i did tank maintenance on my aquarium i spilled about half a bucket of water down the front of the tank and onto the floor ... i always put a towel down when i am doing the maintenance but this was a good deal of water and required several towels to mop up ... last week i noticed the base of the stand (particleboard, econo-stand bought from aquariums west) the particleboard had separated and i can see the particleboard inside now ... it is about 6 inches long ... now today i look and my tank is not level (and i actually used a level), the tank is 30 gallons and the wood, sorry particleboard feels dry but i am wondering if water got under the stand as i have ceramic tiles and maybe the water flowed under in the grout lines ... should i get a new stand ???

For a 30 gallon, I would definitely consider getting a new stand. You can look at it as an excuse to get a nice new piece of furniture. I'm decided for myself no more cheap stands unless I get a fish room.

So...let me start you off here...calling Target...calling Target...you there? Daniel does great work at a fair price. Too bad the examples of his work are on the old site.
What would decide it for me would be piece of mind. If you are worried about it, get a new one. Posting some pictures might help. I could also design and build you one if you are interested.

HAHA Gary - we posted at the same time.
If you can afford it .. why not?
It may save you a headache if anything bad were to happen *fingers crossed*

:) yeah.

Hoolagal, in reality, that particle board is horrid once it gets wet, it's like cardboard, so I would really consider getting a new stand ASAP. Once a tank gets out of level, the chance of springing a leak increases dramatically...don't ask me how I know. :(

okay, i am convinced ... i need a new one and no more budget stands ... when i saw the particleboard inside i thought okay, i can deal with that, but today when i definitely noticed the lean (and it is leaning towards my brand new flatscreen tv) i felt nervous and Daniel, could you make me a pink one ??? how should we discuss as no pm's ... should i give you my email ???
Hey hoolagal, you can definitely have a pink one if that's what you want. You get to have it custom made for you. My email is [email protected] Send me yours and we can start working out the details. Thanks
G
thanks so much ... i have sent you an email :)
You're welcome.
I'd like to see pics of this pink stand once its done... :D lol
They will definitely be posted. lol
hoolagal - you've got mail. Email that is, sent you the pictures of the stand. Let me know what you think.
The construction of stands from most stores scares me unless you budge for the higher end ones.
Me too, I like to over-engineer them when I build them.

I know a member was OCD pink but I can't remember the name. Since we lost all the PM and stuff since the crash, can't recall but she could be all over this pink stand.

i'm going pink :O) and the design is just beautiful ... and for anyone else - do not buy the econo-stand at aquariums west, i would have to say it sucks :)
haha thanks for the tip hoolagal :)

It's not just Aquariums West. All those MDF stands are like that. They don't hold up to water. If I wasn't going to upgrade my 20 gallon, I'd upgrade my stingray stand since it's in my living room. Not that I pour gallons of water on it, but it IS an aquarium and things eventually get a bit wet, no matter how hard you try to keep everything dry.

Can't wait to see the pink stand. :D
