Peat, in the aquarium sense, usually refers to peat moss (in a packed form-Hagen used to sell plates for undergravels and filter inserts). Peat, in a general sense, can refer to vegetative material material that has been packed in the soil layer in a bog and its natural aciidty preserves it.

Just a guess, but it sure sounds good. I would be great at Balderdash...just kidding I think my answer is close.
