he used to have a companion but it got eaten, since then hes pretty much doubled in size

My snail used to do that all the time too. If I remember correctly it is their air tube.

so hes either trying to breathe from the bottom or trying to make the fish jealous

I can't see it's unmentionables. But it is looking for air at what it thinks is the top of the tank, or atleast the highest point in the tank.

snails can also reproduce with them selves, cant remeber what thats called, but that it most definetly snail genitalia.
