Where to buy different species of pond fish

182 Views 19 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  TomC
I have a small ~1500 L pond and am looking for a variety of species of fish. Does anyone know where to buy:
pond loach
mosquito fish
gobi
or other species of fish for ponds in the Vancouver area?
Thanks,
Justin

I've been trying to find different species for my small ponds as well. Most of the suitable species are illegal in BC. I used to have Rosy Minnows, which were able to overwinter, but they are also on the banned list and aren't available in stores anymore.

Ok thanks, I see now that all three of my list above are banned, including mosquito fish.

This pond is not going to be as interesting as I had hoped.
Any other ideas for species?
not really my scene but what about rainbow shiners?

Is that the same as a rainbow barb or rainbow dace? That would be good. Thanks.

If you are able to catch the fish up in September, the possibilities are endless. I have done all kinds of livebearers, South American Cichlids, Barbs, Zebra Danios, Paradise Fish, and more.

Thanks. I tried to find those but the places I checked seemed to be sold out. Perhaps they are coming up later in the year.
Does anyone have Chinese high fin banded sharks? Or know of a source?

Fish Addicts in Langley had some last spring/summer. They were in the back area, where the koi are.

Main Street Aquarium had them recently.
I have had 2 rainbow shiners in a 300 gallon pond for over 2 years now. I’m in a colder climate than Vancouver but plug in a cattle trough de-icer when it’s super cold.
The colours are incredible. They do well with the goldfish and no competition issues if the food is small enough.
I didn’t know rosy minnows were now banned.

I don't see rosy minnows on the banned list.

Thanks. I put a dozen medaka rice fish in yesterday (4 different colours) and they look excellent. They stay at the surface for the most part and are too quick (so far) to end up as koi food.

I swear I just seen some rosy minnows at local pet store
It wouldn't surprise me. Red Bellied Piranhas are also on the list, and I see them for sale all the time. I just wish White Clouds were allowable. They are one of my favorites.
